FAQs

Here are the answers to some Frequently Asked Questions about Refugee Festival Scotland.  If you have a question which is not covered here, please contact us.

What is Refugee Festival Scotland?

Our unique festival celebrates the contribution refugee communities make to life in Scotland - the food and drink, music and poetry, dance, visual art and ideas that people bring with them when they seek safety in Scotland.

The festival invites people from different backgrounds to meet and mix, listen to each other's stories and get to know each other better. Taking part is a way of standing in solidarity with each other, connecting and building bonds of community and friendship.

Who can take part in Refugee Festival Scotland?

Anyone can get involved. If you would like to run an event or activity as part of this year's festival, please fill out an event registration form.

This year's theme is storytelling. Events can take any form - an art exhibition, a piece of theatre, dance performance, cookery demonstration, film screening - the opportunities are endless.  We're looking for events that help overcome barriers and divisions between communities.

What is the deadline for registering my event?

We're accepting applications until midnight on Sunday, 20 MARCH

Do I need to pay to register my event?

No, it is free to register your event.

If you would like to support the work of Scottish Refugee Council, all donations are welcome.  Your support helps us assist people seeking sanctuary to re-build their lives in Scotland. Find out more about the different ways to donate or get involved

Can I submit more than one event?

Yes, you can. Every event included in our Festival programme is an opportunity for people to take part and get together.

Is there any funding available to help me cover the cost of running my event?

Yes. Grassroots groups and community organisations that are run by, or for, refugees can apply for small grants to help cover the cost of running events as part of this year's festival.

We will be sharing more information about how you can apply to our small grants fund soon.

Will Covid-19 affect this year's festival?

We hope that Refugee Festival Scotland can take place as normal this year, and we're really looking forward to joining you for lots of lovely in-person events.

However, Covid-19 is unpredictable and there is a chance that there may still be some restrictions when the festival takes place this June.

Please keep in mind that all festival events must comply with Scottish Government Covid guidelines. We recommend that you check the guidelines for your local authority area in the run-up to your event, to see if any Covid rules still apply.

I have an idea for an event but I don't know if it will work.

If you need a bit more information or advice about a possible event, or would like a little help to complete your application, please get in touch at festival@scottishrefugeecouncil.org.uk and we'll arrange a friendly chat.

Can I run an event in a language other than English?

Yes. It would be great to have events in different languages. We want the Festival to be inclusive for everyone, including speakers of other languages.

What support is available to help me run a successful event as part of this year's Refugee Festival?

We will share a Festival toolkit, full of tips and resources to help you plan and promote your event in April.

Could you use a little extra help from our friendly volunteers on the day? Get in touch with our festival team at festival@scottishrefugeecouncil.org.uk.

I've already submitted my event application but would like to make some changes, what shall I do?

If you would like to make changes to your event/s, please email  Festival@scottishrefugeecouncil.org.uk by 21 March to let us know.
