FAQs

Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about Refugee Festival Scotland.  If you have a question which is not covered here, please contact us.

What is Refugee Festival Scotland?

Our unique festival celebrates the contribution refugee communities make to life in Scotland – the food and drink, music and poetry, dance, visual art and ideas that people bring with them when they seek safety in Scotland.

The festival invites people from different backgrounds to meet and mix, listen to each other’s stories and get to know each other better. Taking part is a way of standing in solidarity with each other, connecting and building bonds of community and friendship.

How has Covid-19 affected this year’s festival?

Due to Covid restrictions and to keep us all safe, events for this year’s Refugee Festival must be accessible online and must follow current government and public health guidelines.

As a result, the way that organisers plan and hold events might have to be a little different. Film screenings, performances, workshops and discussion panels will be held on streaming platforms like Zoom, Skype, Microsoft Teams and Facebook Live.  Please take this into account when planning your event and get in touch if you have any questions or concerns.

Can I organise an outdoor event as part of this year’s Refugee Festival?

We are currently accepting applications for outdoor events that comply with Scottish Government Covid guidelines. However, please be aware that you may have to make changes to, or cancel these events in line with the latest coronavirus guidelines.

We recommend that you check the guidelines for your local authority area regularly and keep these in mind when planning your event.

We’re really looking forward to seeing you all at this year’s festival, but it is really important that we celebrate safely.

Who can get involved in Refugee Festival Scotland 2021?

Anyone can get involved. If you have an idea for an event or activity for this year’s festival, please fill out an event registration.

Events can take any form – an exhibition, a piece of theatre, dance, a workshop – so long as people can access it online. The opportunities are endless but we are seeking events that help overcome barriers and divisions between communities.

When is the deadline for registering events?

We’re accepting applications until midnight on Sunday 9th May.

Do I need to pay to register my event?

No, it is free to register your event.

If you would like to support the work of Scottish Refugee Council, all donations are welcome.  Your support helps us assist people seeking sanctuary to re-build their lives in Scotland. Find out more about the different ways to donate or get involved.

Can I submit more than one event?

Indeed, you can! Every event included in our Festival programme is an opportunity for people to take part and get together online.

Can I apply for funding to run my event?

There is no funding available specifically for Refugee Festival Scotland events. However, some groups and organisations may be eligible to apply for funding from the New Scots Refugee Integration Project. For more information, please click here.

I have an idea for an event but I don’t know if it will work.

If you need a bit more information or advice about a possible event or would like a little help to complete your application, please get in touch with us and we’ll arrange a friendly chat.

Can I run an event in a language other than English?

Yes. It would be great to have events in different languages. We want the Festival to be inclusive for everyone, including speakers of other languages.

What support is available to help me run a successful online event as part of this year’s Refugee Festival?

We know that organising events for this year’s festival might present some challenges, but don’t worry, we are here to help make sure that your online event is a great success.

There is a section about training requirements in the event registration form. Please complete this section. It will help us to provide event organisers with the training and support they need.

A Festival toolkit, containing tips and resources to help you plan and promote your online event, will also be shared with all event organisers in May.

I’ve already submitted my event application but would like to make some changes, what shall I do?

The only way to make changes to the event/s you registered is by sending all the changes you want to make to us by email: Festival@scottishrefugeecouncil.org.uk

Please note the deadline to make any changes is 15th May 2021.
