Community Celebration Heritage Visual Art

This exhibition didn’t begin in a gallery; it began when people fleeing war in Ukraine found sanctuary in Orkney. As they settled into these islands rich in myths, they noticed striking similarities between Scottish and Ukrainian folklore.
Over recent months, the artists dived back into the stories of their childhood while also exploring the myths of their new home. Though different on the surface, these traditions share a deep fascination with the natural world and the spirits believed to inhabit it.

By placing them side-by-side, the artists invite you on a journey of comparison between Ukrainian and Scottish mythology, exploring how the same ancient shadows are cast onto two very different landscapes.

This exhibition celebrates our common ground – the rich heritage that once explained the mysteries of the world to our ancestors, the stories that connect us to our roots and the understanding that grows when two cultures meet.
