A exhibition showcasing the creative journeys of communities affected by war, displacement and persecution. ‘Beyond Our Depth’ was a collaborative community art project designed in partnership with Abandoned Artists, The Welcoming Association, Art in Healthcare and National Galleries of Scotland which took place between 2022 and 2024.
The project focused on refugees and asylum seekers and included 8 participatory art sessions specifically tailored for the needs of displaced participants, with an awareness of trauma triggers and the need for safety. On their creative journey the group explored different techniques and materials while working on a collaborative art project consisting of individual abstract sculptures. What emerged was not only a body of work, but a gradual weaving of connection between people, stories, and moments of presence.
‘Beyond Our Depth’ reflects how art can hold experience without demanding explanation offering a way to share, process, and gently begin transforming personal trauma. Initially showcased at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, the artworks hold a quiet yet powerful potential to enter inclusive community art spaces where a wider public can experience them.
