Twilight Talk: Creative Journeys for New Scots
Thursday, 23 June
18:00 - 20:00
By Sewing2gether All Nations
This talk and panel discussion is part of an exciting programme of events run by Sewing2gether All Nations in partnership with Journeys in Design: Our Linen Stories.
Creative Journeys for New Scots reflects on the rich textile heritage of Scotland and of the New Scots that have settled here. Join our panel – which includes weavers who moved to Scotland from Syria and Yemen – to share stories behind textiles and explore the role of design in our cultural landscapes.
Linen mill workers, known as ‘Millies’ formed the backbone of the first industry to emerge from Scotland, Ireland and much of Europe: hard-working, multi-tasking and super-skilled.
At the heart of our All Nations, All Millies programme is an exhibition of Millie dolls, a tea towel tribute to textile workers from Scotland and around the world, which were hand sewn by members of our group.
These dolls, which are on display in Paisley Central Library, capture the legacy of grandmothers, mothers and sisters who have passed their sewing skills down from generation to generation.
