A community screening of the UK’s official entry to the 2023 Academy Awards, WINNERS by Hassan Nazir, the multiple award winning Scottish-Iranian writer-director based in Aberdeen.

Synopsis

Children in a small provincial Iranian town scour the local dump, looking for valuable materials they can sell to support their families. One day, film-obsessed nine-year-old Yahya and his best friend Leyla find an Oscar statue in the sand. After Yahya’s boss Nazer Khan (played by Reza Naji) agrees to help them locate the statue’s owner, their quest to return it becomes a story of friendship and a shared love of cinema.

Event

Set in Iran and drawing on Hassan’s childhood experience, the film is a tribute to Iranian culture, the power of cinema and human resilience. Hassan arrived in the UK as a refugee over 20 years ago but followed his passion for artistic self-expression and is now celebrated internationally for his work.

The screening will be proceeded by a special presentation of 1 minute short films by local schoolchildren from Glasgow’s south side. On behalf of the producers, the event is being coordinated by Cosmic Cat with support from local community organiser Tab Niamat.

WINNERS is produced by Sylph Productions and Edge City Film and screens courtesy of UK distributor Modern Films: https://www.modernfilms.com/winners
