The Bikes for Refugees (Scotland) celebration night will host global human rights’ activist Shannon Galpin and launch a screen-printed set of art posters inspired by Bikes for Refugees plus live linked conversations with Afghan women refugees in Europe.
Shannon helped to build the women’s right-to-ride movement in Afghanistan and trained the first Afghan women’s national cycling team including Masomah Alizada the first Afghan Olympic cyclist refugee. She worked for over a decade on Afghan women’s right’s projects and more recently has been evacuating cyclists and their families since the Taliban takeover.
Shannon will speak directly with refugees on the night about bicycles as tools of liberation, her evacuation work, and about Masomah’s Olympic story. Linking her work to Bikes for Refugees who have welcomed over 2000 New Scots with free bikes providing essential mobility and freedom of movement.
Edinburgh Printmakers will host the launch event alongside an international exhibition of artists from refugee and migrant backgrounds. The event is free and open to everyone, no booking required.
