Stornoway is gearing up for a lively week this June as the group Hebridean Refugee Community holds its own mini festival as part of Refugee Festival Scotland 2026.
From 12 to 20 June, local venues across the town will host family craft sessions, school visits, film screenings, community food and powerful storytelling from people who’ve made the islands their home.
The group has become a steady grassroots presence in the Outer Hebrides, creating warm, welcoming spaces where people can learn and support one another, and flourish. Formed by members of the refugee community alongside the Council’s Resettlement Team, they focus on inclusion, solidarity and community‑led activities that bring people together.
Murtaza Barlas, chairperson at the Hebridean Refugee Community, explains what’s at the heart of their work:
“Our aim is to bring people together, provide support, and create a sense of unity and belonging in a place where distances, both physical and social, can sometimes feel large. We want to act as a bridge between local residents and refugees, helping local people better understand the experiences of those who have arrived here, while also supporting refugees to integrate more quickly and confidently into their new community.”
“Being part of this year’s Refugee Festival Scotland is a meaningful opportunity for us. It allows us to bring our voices into a wider conversation and to celebrate both resilience and diversity.”
Their events programme aims to open doors and spark conversations to build understanding and help the community feel more connected.
