Volunteer spotlight: Meet Mariia, our Digital Content Volunteer

As a Digital Content Volunteer, Mariia is bringing the sights, sounds and flavours of Refugee Festival Scotland to life on social media. Here, she explains why she’s donating her time, skills and experience to support this year’s festival.

Hi, I’m Mariia. I moved to Scotland with my two daughters six months after the devastating war began in my home country, Ukraine. From the moment we arrived, we have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of the Scottish people, who welcomed us with open arms.

Since the first days of the war in Ukraine, I have been deeply involved in volunteer work, helping families escape from occupied territories.

My personal journey of starting a new life in a foreign country fuels my passion for volunteering. I know firsthand the challenges and uncertainties refugees face, and I am determined to make a difference.

I joined Refugee Festival Scotland because I believe in the power of community and the importance of supporting those in need. This festival is more than just a celebration; it is a beacon of hope and solidarity. It shows refugees that they are not alone and that people from all over the world, along with local organizations, stand ready to support them every step of the way.

What excites me most about this year’s festival is the opportunity to connect with fellow refugees and Scots, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and supported. Together, we can build bridges of understanding and compassion, and celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures that make Scotland so vibrant.

So come join us at Refugee Festival Scotland! Be a part of this incredible journey, where every story shared and every smile exchanged strengthens the bond of our global community.

Let’s show the world that Scotland is a place where everyone can find a home, no matter where they come from.
