This year’s Refugee Festival Scotland line-up features flavours from around the world. Here are nine mouth-watering events for anyone who enjoys food.

1. Mastering New Flavours and Recipes

When: 10am-3pm on Saturday 15 June

Where: Common Village, Glasgow

Join Africa Delice on a journey of culinary exploration. Sample delicious food, pick up new techniques at the cross-cultural cooking exchange and discover how to create global flavours at a hands-on workshop led by skilled chefs.

2. World Piece / سلام العالم

When: 11am-4pm on Tuesday 18 June

Where: The Simmers Centre, Aberdeen

A ‘fine piece’ is Aberdonian for a sweet treat. People rebuilding their lives in the city will be creating their own fine pieces at CFINE’s Community Kitchen. Head over for a taste of home-cooked dishes from Afghanistan, Eritriea, Ethiopia, Kurdistan and more.

3. Refugee Food Festival

When: 11am-2pm on Wednesday 19 June

Where: Townhead Village Hall, Glasgow

Join Cross Ethnic for a community meal with a difference and enjoy delicious and diverse flavours from seven countries around the globe.

4. Dumfries International Street Food Festival

When: 10am-4pm on Saturday, 22 June

Where: Dock Park, Dumfries

Head on over to Dock Park for a food-focussed celebration of cultures and cuisines from around the world. Browse stalls selling delicious street food and sample flavours from Syria, Yemen, Ukraine and more!

5. Community Meal – وجبة مجتمعية

When: 11.30am-1.30pm on Thursday, 20 June

Where: St Rollox Church, Sighthill, Glasgow

North Glasgow Community Food Initiative are holding a Community Meal on World Refugee Day. This celebration is open to everyone and there’s no need to book. Just turn up on the day to meet new friends and enjoy some delicious food which reflects the cultural diversity of the local area.

6. All You Knead is Love – العجن هو الحب

When: 11am-2pm on Friday, 21 June

Where: Garnethill Multicultural Centre, Glasgow

Glasgow ESOL Forum and Central and West Integration Network invite you to break bread with them at a special community celebration. Discover bread recipes from around the world, enjoy a delicious community meal and see a live bread-making demonstration. Cook books containing recipes and stories from community members will be available to buy.

7. Multicultural Food Festival – مهرجان الأكلات حول العالم

When: 1.30-5pm on Saturday, 22 June

Where: Greyfriars Charteris Centre, Edinburgh

Join the Inclusive North African Community in Edinburgh for a multicultural food experience. Meet people rebuilding their lives in Scotland and delight your taste buds with dishes from around the world prepared by chefs from refugee backgrounds.

8. Challah and History

When: 2-4pm on Saturday 16 June

Where: Garnethill Synagogue, Glasgow

Head over to The Scottish Jewish Heritage Centre to create comic strips about your origin story, learn about Scotland’s refugee history and try making your own Challah bread.

9. Home and Hospitality: Exploring food and pottery making

When: 11am-4pm on Sunday, 23 June

Where: Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow

Food shapes memory and cultural identity. It brings people together through shared experience. This double workshop explores the cultural significance of food.

In the morning, Paria Goodarzi will host a tie-dye and monoprint workshop using natural food dyes on tote bags. The afternoon session, led by Ruth Impey, will invite participants to reflect on foods that are important to them before having a go at inlaying a contrasting slip into a clay tile.
