7 energising sports events to get your heart racing

Sport is a wonderful way to keep fit, boost mood and build community. Here are seven sporty Refugee Festival Scotland events to help you get active this June.

1. Street Soccer Scotland – New Scots

When: 14 June from 4-8.30pm

Where: Portobello Beach, Edinburgh

Football is a great way to break down barriers and connect with new people. Street Soccer helps folk who may be experiencing isolation by inviting them to have a kick about. Everyone is welcome. There are no fees and no registration required – just turn up.

2. Sports and Physical Activity Event

When: 15 June from 1-5pm

Where: Toryglen Regional Football Centre, Glasgow

Join Shaping Life to keep fit, have fun and make some new friends at an afternoon of football and rounders in Toryglen.

3. Come and Try Day

When: 15 June from 10am-3.30pm

Where: Civic Hall, Perth

Try out different activities for mind and body including tai chi, Zumba, karate and yoga. All sessions will be led by qualified instructors and are free of charge.

4. LGBT Unity 5-a-side Tournament

When: 15 June from 12.30-4.30pm

Where: Powerleague Soccer Centre, Glasgow

Join LGBT Unity for an inclusive 5-a-side football tournament for LGBTQIA+ refugees, people seeking asylum and allies. Mixed gender teams will play in a supportive environment. Come along for the change to meet new people and build understanding.

5. Football for all

Where: 16 June from 3-7pm

Where: Toryglen Regional Football Centre, Glasgow

This event aims to help refugees and young people who are at risk of isolation and facing language and cultural barriers have fun and celebrate together with an afternoon of football. Everyone is welcome to join Afroscots United for some training, play a game or two, and enjoy food and refreshments.

6. You, Me and a Game of Sport

Join Aberdeen Interfaith for this friendly and welcoming three-part event. Make some new friends. Maybe try some new sports and take a moment to de-stress and relax.

7. Fun With Sport

When: 22 June from 12-3pm

Where: Tron St Mary’s Church, Springburn

Join North East Glasgow Framework for Dialogue for an afternoon of sports to bring refugees, people seeking asylum and local people in the community together to break down barriers and help new arrivals feel more at home.
